How to identify a piece of jewelry

Most pieces that turn up in a drawer, a box of inherited things or a market stall can be placed fairly precisely — by object type, construction, findings, marks and design vocabulary — without anyone claiming what they are worth. This is how to do that from photographs, and where the photograph stops being enough.

Almost every weak identification is a photography problem, not a knowledge problem. Jewelry is small, curved and shiny: it reflects the room, throws glare across the surface you need, and pulls autofocus onto the background.

  • Plain, non-reflective background. A sheet of matte paper, an unpatterned cloth, a bare wooden table. Avoid glass, mirrors, polished stone and anything printed. Never shoot on a hand if you can help it — skin tone drags the white balance and changes how the metal reads.
  • Soft daylight, no flash. Set the piece near a window on an overcast day, or a step back from direct sun. Flash blows out the highlights on a polished surface and flattens a stamp into a blank bright patch. If the room is dark, use two lamps at an angle rather than one overhead.
  • Kill the glare by moving, not by editing. Rotate the piece a few degrees and shoot again; the angle where the metal stops burning out is usually a small turn away.
  • Fill the frame. The piece should take up most of the picture. A ring lost in the middle of a table gives nothing to read. Back off a little and use the zoom if your phone cannot focus close.
  • Take separate macro shots. One overall photograph plus close-ups of the back, the clasp, the hinge and catch, the inside of a shank, and every stamp you can find. Tap to focus on the detail, take three, keep the sharpest.
  • Include something for scale when size matters: a coin or a ruler edge. "About 4 mm across" is an observation; "small" is not.

A sharp, close, evenly lit photograph of a stamp is worth more than any other picture you can take. It is the one frame that moves a reading from "consistent with silver" to "carries a mark asserting a silver standard".

A step-by-step identification process

  1. Name the object type first. Ring, necklace, bracelet, earrings, brooch, pendant, pin, cufflink, charm. Everything downstream — where marks sit, which findings matter, which style clues apply — depends on getting this right, and it is the one step a photograph settles cleanly.
  2. Describe the construction before interpreting it. Write down what is physically there: the shape of the shank, the type of setting, the link pattern of a chain, the fastening, the number and arrangement of stones, whether the back is open or closed. Keep this list free of conclusions.
  3. Look at the findings and the back. The fronts of pieces are designed; the backs are built. Clasps, catches, hinges, pin stems, earring fittings and solder joins carry more identification evidence per square millimetre than the decorated face does.
  4. Find the marks. Search every likely surface under a loupe or a phone macro lens before concluding there are none. Marks hide under a clasp tongue, inside a bail, on the underside of a catch plate.
  5. Read the surface. Colour, lustre, wear at edges and high points, discolouration where a plating has gone through, patina in recesses, visible solder lines, two-tone joins.
  6. Only then interpret. For each observation ask what it is consistent with — and immediately ask what else produces the same appearance. Yellow metal covers gold, gold plate, gold fill, brass and bronze; white metal covers silver, white gold, platinum, palladium, steel, rhodium plate and base alloys.
  7. Write down what would change your mind. An identification you cannot argue against is a guess wearing a confident voice.

Object type and construction: what to look at

Rings. The shank is the band itself: even width, tapered, split, or reinforced where it joins the head. The head or setting is the part holding the stone — a claw or prong setting lifts the stone clear, a bezel wraps a rim of metal around it, a rub-over sets it flush, a pavé holds many small stones in beads, a tension setting grips it between two ends. Look at the gallery, the open structure under the stone: fabricated galleries are made of soldered parts with visible seams, cast ones come out in a single piece with slightly soft edges and often tiny surface porosity. Check the inside of the shank for wear, for a second colour of metal where a band has been sized, and for stamps.

Necklaces and chains. Identify the link pattern — cable, curb, figaro, rope, box, snake, belcher, byzantine — and whether links are soldered closed or merely butted together. Then the clasp: spring ring, lobster claw, bolt ring, barrel or torpedo screw, box clasp with a tongue, fishhook, toggle, magnetic. Clasps get replaced more often than any other part, so a modern clasp on an older chain is common and proves nothing on its own. Pendants have a bail; look at whether it is soldered, hinged or a simple jump ring, and whether the ring is closed.

Earrings. The fitting is the most informative part: a post with a butterfly or screw-back nut, a lever back, a shepherd's hook, a kidney wire, a continuous hoop wire, a clip, or a screw-back for unpierced ears. Note whether the fitting matches the metal colour of the front, whether the join looks original or added, and whether the two earrings of a pair actually match.

Brooches and pins. Photograph the whole back. The catch may be a simple C-hook, a rotating safety catch, or a locking trombone tube; the hinge a rolled tube soldered on, or a modern riveted joint. Note whether the pin stem extends past the edge of the brooch and whether it has been shortened or replaced. Construction on the back outlasts fashion and survives re-polishing.

Where the marks sit, and how to read what is legible

Marks are stamped where they will not spoil the design and the metal is thick enough to take a punch:

  • Rings — the inside of the shank, usually opposite the head.
  • Necklaces and bracelets — the clasp, the end tag, a small plate next to the clasp, or the last link.
  • Earrings — the post, the back plate, the butterfly, or the inside of a hoop.
  • Brooches and pins — the catch plate, the back of the body, or the pin stem.
  • Pendants — the bail or the back plate.
  • Watches — the case back, the inside of a lug, or the clasp of the bracelet.

A full mark is usually several separate punches, not one stamp: a maker's or sponsor's mark identifying who submitted the piece, a standard or purity mark asserting the metal content, an assay office mark, sometimes a date letter, sometimes an import mark. Each punch has its own outline — rectangle, oval, shield, lozenge, cartouche — and the outline is itself evidence, so describe it as carefully as you describe the characters.

Read what is there, and only what is there. If two characters are sharp and a third is worn to a smudge, record the smudge as unreadable rather than filling it in with the character that "must" be next. A mark also asserts rather than proves: a stamp naming a standard is a claim about the metal under it, and plated or replated base metal carrying an optimistic stamp is a real and ordinary thing. Style and period clues give a range, never a year

Design vocabulary places a piece in a family: the naturalistic curves and enamel of Art Nouveau, the light platinum lacework and milgrain of Edwardian work, the geometry and calibré-cut stones of Art Deco, the heavy rose-gold volumes of retro, the abstract textures of mid-century studio work, the crisp machined symmetry of contemporary manufacture. None of that dates a piece. Every one of those styles has been revived, reproduced and cast from originals, and a good revival piece can be indistinguishable in the frame. What separates them is usually construction rather than design: machine-made findings, a modern clasp type, laser-etched rather than punched marks, cast parts where the original technique was fabrication, and a uniformity of finish that hand work does not produce. So the honest output of this step is a broad range, the specific visible feature that suggests it, and the feature that would argue against it. What a photograph cannot prove

Some questions stay open no matter how good the picture is, and knowing which ones saves you from trusting an answer that was never available:

  • Purity. No image shows metal composition. A stamp is a claim; an assay office, an XRF reading or a specific gravity test is evidence.
  • Plated versus solid. Wear at an edge can suggest a plating has worn through, but intact plating over base metal photographs exactly like solid metal. Weight on a gram scale and a professional test settle it.
  • Natural, lab-grown, treated or glass. Bubbles, swirl marks and rounded facet junctions can point to glass or paste, but a lab-grown stone and its natural counterpart are the same material and look the same. Only a gemmologist with instruments can separate them.
  • Authenticity and maker. A signature can be copied, and an unsigned piece is not therefore unsigned work. Attribution needs the piece, the marks and the reference literature together.
  • Age. Broad range, yes. A year, no.
  • Value. Value depends on composition, condition, provenance and a market on a given day. None of those are visible, and nothing on this site quotes one. That question belongs to an independent appraiser, and it is worth asking only once the questions above have been answered.
