How to read gold, silver and platinum hallmarks

The separate punches that make up a mark, where they sit on each kind of piece, how to photograph one, and why a worn character has to stay unread.

A hallmark is not one stamp. It is a small row of separate punches, each answering a different question, and most of the confusion around marks comes from reading the row as a single word. Learn what the parts are doing and a smudged line of symbols on the inside of a shank turns into a set of specific, checkable claims.

Before anything else: get a sharp photograph of the mark. It is the single most informative frame you can take of any piece, and a close-up of a stamp is a valid subject on its own — you do not need the whole piece in the shot.

The parts of a mark

Maker’s or sponsor’s mark. Usually initials in a shaped surround, identifying who made the piece or who submitted it for assay. Sponsor and maker are not always the same party, which is why a well-known name on a mark is not automatically a claim about who worked the metal.

Standard or purity mark. The assertion about metal content: a millesimal number such as 375, 585, 750, 800, 900, 925, 950 or 999, or a word or symbol standing for a standard. This is the punch people care about most, and it is also the one most often misunderstood — see below.

Assay office mark. A symbol for the office that tested and struck the piece. Different countries run different systems, and in some markets assay is voluntary or absent entirely, so its absence is not evidence of anything on its own.

Date letter. In the systems that use them, a single letter in a shaped surround, running through an alphabet in cycles. The letter only means something in combination with the office mark, the font and the shape of the surround, all three read against reference tables — which is precisely the work that needs the piece and the literature, not a photograph.

Import mark. A mark applied when a piece is assayed in a country other than the one it was made in. Its presence says something about where the piece travelled, not about who made it.

Alongside the official punches you will find informal stamps: trade names, patent or registration numbers, and abbreviations such as those indicating plating or rolled gold rather than solid metal. Those abbreviations matter enormously and are easy to miss because they are often struck smaller than the number next to them.

Where marks sit

Marks go where a punch will not spoil the design and where the metal is thick enough to take the blow:

  • Rings: inside the shank, usually opposite the head.
  • Necklaces and bracelets: the clasp, the end tag, a small plate beside the clasp, or the last link.
  • Earrings: the post, the back plate, the butterfly, the inside of a hoop.
  • Brooches and pins: the catch plate, the back of the body, sometimes the pin stem.
  • Pendants: the bail or the back plate.
  • Watches: the case back, the inside of a lug, or the bracelet clasp.

Search all of them before deciding a piece is unmarked. Marks hide under a clasp tongue, inside a bail, on the underside of a catch plate, or in a spot that has been polished so many times the punch is barely a ghost.

A caution: clasps get replaced. A mark on a clasp describes the clasp. If the chain itself carries no mark, the mark on its fastening tells you less than you would like.

What a standard mark actually claims

A purity mark is an assertion, not a proof. In systems with a functioning assay office, a struck standard mark carries real institutional weight; in markets where stamping is unregulated, it carries whatever the person with the punch decided it should. Plated and base-metal pieces wearing optimistic stamps exist, in quantity, and a photograph cannot tell them from the real thing.

So the honest reading of a legible standard mark is: this piece carries a mark asserting such-and-such a standard. Whether the metal honours the claim is a question for a gram scale, a specific gravity test, an XRF reading or an assay office — all of which need the piece in hand. The same goes for a mark that looks right but sits oddly, in the wrong typeface, or struck too crisply for the wear on the surrounding metal.

Why an illegible mark has to stay illegible

This is the failure worth guarding against hardest. If three characters are sharp and a fourth is worn into a smudge, the temptation is to complete it — the piece looks like silver, the visible characters are 9, 2 and something, so it must be 925. That inference is doing the piece a disservice in both directions: it manufactures evidence that was not there, and it hides the fact that a better photograph or a loupe would have produced the real answer.

The discipline is simple. Transcribe what you can resolve, character by character. Mark the rest as unreadable and say how many characters appear to be missing. Describe the outline of each punch — rectangle, oval, shield, lozenge, cartouche — because the outline is evidence in its own right, and a punch shape often survives legibly long after the characters inside it have worn away. That is how the identifier handles marks: what is legible is transcribed, uncertain characters are flagged as uncertain, the punch shapes and positions are described, and no character is ever filled in from the look of the metal. A report that says “four punches, second one reads 9?5, oval surround” is more useful than one that confidently says 925, because it tells you exactly which photograph to retake.

Photographing a mark

Marks are tiny, recessed and shiny, which makes them the hardest thing on the piece to shoot.

Use daylight, never flash. A stamp is read by the shadow inside the punch; flash fills that shadow and erases the mark.

Light it from the side, low and raking. Move the lamp or the piece until the characters throw visible shadows. This one change does more than any camera setting.

Get close, but not closer than your lens can focus. Most phones lose focus somewhere around 8 to 10 cm; back off slightly and use the zoom, or use a clip-on macro lens or a 10x loupe held over the camera. Brace your hands or rest the piece on a table.

Hold the piece so the marked surface is flat to the camera rather than curving away. On a ring shank this means tilting it so that at least the punch you care about sits square to the lens; a mark shot across a curve goes soft at both ends.

Take several frames at slightly different angles. Marks are read by shadow, and the difference between an unreadable and a legible stamp is often five degrees of rotation.

What to do with the reading

A resolved mark narrows the field; it does not close it. To take it further, weigh the piece, look at it under a loupe, and then choose the right expert for the question that remains: a jeweller for construction and repairs, a gemmologist for stones, an assay office for the metal, an independent appraiser if you need a value — which nothing on this site will ever quote.
